The options available on your custom fly rod are endless. Our personal style tends toward more durable, clean designs. We will work with you on any options you prefer as well as make suggestions to help you through the design process. Below are some examples and options. When you add a dublhawl custom rod to your shopping cart, we'll ask about your preferences for each category.
We build our custom fly rods using a number of different blank manufacturers. The anglers needs, style, and target fisheries really drive our choices and we will work with you. Some of our favorite options:
North Fork Composites makes some exceptional fly rod blanks in the high performance category. We especially like the NFC 10, 11, and 12 wt. blanks for big saltwater species. They are ultra light, deadly accurate, and have a great stealth sanded finish that provides an endless canvas for thread and finish options.
Anther option for 10 wt. or lighter single-hand fly rods in the is the Temple Fork Outfitters BVK. The BVK is TFO's best casting rod in our opinion. Factory BVKs consistently score higher than rods costing twice as much in independent testing. We take the BVK blank and add components and grip options that make this a more durable rod with your personalized touch.
If you would like a blank that has great backbone, good castability and comes in some wild colors, we have also had good sucesss with MHX rod blanks.
For switch rods we work with a boutique blank builder on the west coast. The Switch rod was invented there, they know what they are up to. If you want to go big for Steelhead, Salmon or other silvery targets, we can work with you on big water switch/spey blank options too.
All of our blanks have warranty backing from the factory. If you break it, we'll work with the manufacturer to repair or replace, and will transfer your custom components to your new rod as part of our No Fault Rod Warranty.
Cork is a beautiful natural material. We hand turn all of our cork grips in our shop from cork sourced from Portugal.
While it has become harder over the years to find clear cork for custom grips, there are some truly cool options available with burled cork rings and rubberized cork. The added benefit here is higher durability as well as custom look and feel.
Our cork suggestion is to add a few burl accents, not overdo it. We also like to add rubberized burl cork on butt sections or at the top of the reel seat where the cork is inletted. Let us know what you like and we'll make it happen.
Our preferred reel seat options tend toward all metal, anodized aluminum reel seats. We find that over time they have a durable style and meet a wide variety of needs. Anodized aluminum is bomb proof in fresh and salt water.
Our preference is to use double lock nut reel seats for added reel security.
For guides we strongly recommend standard wire, double foot snake guides, with a Titanium Chrome finish. Our preference is original Snake Brand guides from industry veteran Mike McCoy. Over time these are the most durable, corrosion resistant option you will find. Unless you want a 3-weight bluegill rod, we don't recommend single foot fly guides.
For stripper guides, there are lots of options. Our 1st recommendation is solid titanium framed stripper guides with ceramic inserts. Manufuctures include Fuji and ALPS
If you want a different look thats a bit more old school, we take a page from the spey rod builders out there and can use "boat rod" style SS316 strippers with a TiCH coating. These build out a bit heavier, but have a retro look and are bomb proof in their durability, with no pressed in ring.
In our humble opinion, this is where many folks go overboard with custom rod builds. Fly rods are casting tools to catch fish. If you want to go super bling with crazy thread work, have us build you a stand up tuna rod.
Don't get us wrong, there are some true thread artists out there, and thats got its place, but we want to build fly rods for you that are designed to be fished, not admired on a shelf. We really like to match blank colors for a subdued look.
Metallic thread work can look good when matched to blank color.
We hand label our rods with the personal information of the owner. Whatever you want, we'll put it on there for you. Feather inlay can be really sweet too.
Reach out, we'll give you some ideas.
If you want a naked mermaid sticker, we have those too.
